The most well-known of the verdant Ionian Greece islands, Corfu lies just off Albania, a large enough island to contain an attractive unspoiled hinterland behind the stretches of package resorts thrown up in the 1960s. The main town of Corfu is a bustling capital, close to the airport and ferries for the mainland and Italy. It comprises historic quarters squeezed between forts constructed by various invaders who have occupied the island over the last millennium – including the British, who came to Corfu in the 19th century. |
With a multitude of sandy beaches and a spectacular medieval old town of grandiose buildings and winding cobbled streets, it's no surprise that Rhodes is one of Greece Islands top destinations. Always an important force in antiquity, Rhodes briefly overtook Athens in the third century BC as a centre for the arts, though its subsequent prosperity was checkered. The heaviest imprint on the Old Town was made by the Knights of St John (1309-1522), whose order drew crusaders from all over Europe. Divided into langues (people of the same tongue), the Knights each built their own auberge, a hostel with private chapel and dining hall. |
Santorini is probably the most popular image the world has of Greece, whitewashed houses, blue domed churches, narrow alleys etc. Yet it is unlike anywhere else in Greece we have visited. All around are sights that have been depicted on the pages of magazines, posters and books all over the world. It is dramatic, spectacular and cosmopolitan. This Greece island is officially known as Thira. The present name is derived from the island's church of St. Irene. It is said that foreign seamen used to call the Saint, 'Santa Irini', and in time this became Santorini. |
Mykonos is the most sought-after island within the Cycladic Greece Islands group, the island itself is barren and rocky but offers something for everyone. The island boasts fantastic views, combining the coastline, mountains and sugar-cube buildings - you can see why Mykonos is always in high demand. The windmills of Mykonos are the trademark of the whole island, which can be seen from every point of the main town, known locally as "hora", the windmills and are a reminder of times gone as they stand on a hill overlooking the area. |
